Mayo poker players in Vegas
THREE of the top poker players in Claremorris are this week packing their bags and gathering their dollars and passports, as they prepare to jet off to Los Vegas on Thursday (July 5) to take part in the World Series of Poker.
Claremorris-man Danny McHugh, who proved to be a huge success at the Irish Poker Open in April will be joined in Los Vegas by Cavan-born but Clare-morris-resident Enda McGearty and Knock-native Nicky Cunnane. In addition, Castlerea Garda Tom Kennedy, who was stationed in Claremorris for a number of years in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, will also be trying his hand at the jackpot.
While Danny will be paying the $10,000 entry fee, Kennedy has already made his way to the States and will be trying to pick up a ticket at one of the Satellite Tournaments this week.
The World Series of Poker Main Event will begin on Friday next. The Main Event - a $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’Em World Championship - traditionally draws the largest fields in poker. Last year, 8,773 players competed for the $12million top prize and coveted WSOP gold bracelet. In total, the winners scooped over $100million in prize money last year.
